Gingerbread Mug Cake

As a health coach it’s important that I’m always staying on top of the newest health crazes – and while this specific diet has been around for ages it seems to have been increasing in popularity due to its effectiveness. This diet I am talking about is called “Ayurveda”, it be defined as a system, which uses the inherent principles of nature, to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual’s body, mind and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature.

In most parts of the US we are in winter, which means many places are wet, chilly and bare. With all the cold weather our body’s fire is at rest , meaning our metabolism and digestion may need a little extra push.

To do this we need to ignite our inner “fire” – we can do this a few different ways…

1. Drinking a lemon/ginger tonic first thing in the morning – this will hydrate your tissues, stimulate your circulation and improve your digestion. To make combine one half inch slice of ginger root, juice from 1 lemon, 2 cups of purified water, 2 tsp organic raw honey, 3 dashes cinnamon, 2 dashes tumeric, 1 dash cayenne into a blender. Blend and split in two. Enjoy.

2. Eat more warm foods – soups, oatmeal, cooked vegetables and proteins, and avoid cold drinks.

3. Add warming spices to your foods such as ginger, clove, mustard seed, cayenne and black pepper.

Try this ginger mug cake recipe to find a fun warming way to add this spice into your diet:

1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp molasses
1 tbsp coconut sugar
3 tsp coconut oil, melted
3 tbsp almond milk
1 scoop designer protein
1/4 tsp baking powder

1. Grease a mug with coconut oil. Combine all ingredients into oversized mug. Stir with a small whisk or fork until batter is smooth.
2. Microwave for 1 1/2 minutes. If cake is not done, microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Serve while warm.

BONUS: molasses is considered a superfood since it has a rich nutritional profile – Blackstrap molasses has a high iron content, as well as it contains vitamin B6, calcium, manganese, magnesium and potassium.
